A medical helping hand

The Medical Sailing Ministries (MSM) provides medical assistance to the remote Islands of Vanuatu. MSM is a group of volunteers who assist with many medical incidents and, in particular, works with South Pacific communities in the prevention of blindness.

During the night and morning of May 5, the combination of sea swell and high winds rocked the group’s yacht, Chimere, resulting in one seafarer on board falling awkwardly on his hand.

With many of the Chimere’s medical volunteers ashore, knowing that Pacific Dawn was on the horizon and help was available made the man’s pain a bit more bearable.

Pacific Dawn was on a cruise from Brisbane and at the time was at anchor off Mystery Island, one of those great South Pacific destinations for beaches and snorkelling.

Chimere’s skipper made contact with Pacific Dawn’s Captain David Box telling him of the incident and the possibility of the injured man having broken a bone.

The Pacific Dawn team was only too happy to assist fellow seafarers, particularly these selfless people who represent a worthy cause that helps others.

Two seafarers from the Chimere came on board Pacific Dawn to meet our onboard medical team. With the medical technology available, our Senior Doctor, Colin Cameron, confirmed the injured man had suffered a hand fracture and applied plaster to immobilise the break.

The seafarers from the Chimere were shown around our superliner before being tendered back to the shores of Mystery Island to rejoin their own yacht.

You guys on the Pacific Dawn were a fantastic and unexpected surprise. It certainly reduced the anxiety levels in the MSM Team member back here in Oz. Thanks again.

Pacific Dawn is a pleasure to sail on and the staff are of the highest standard especially Senior Doctor, Colin Cameron who saved my husbands life and leg on the NYE cruise this past December January. Bruce contracted a type of flesh eating bug in his leg and Dr Cameron advised he didn’t think he would be able to save the leg let alone Bruce’s life, but being the true professional that he is he kept working on him until we docked in Brisbane on the 9th of January and the ship was met by the abmbulance who transported Bruce to Royal Brisbane Hospital were he stayed for a further 8 weeks and today he is walking around very healthy and with both legs. Once again thank you Dr Cameron.

Fantastic for Pacific Dawn to help them like this. (I sailed on this ship in June) It is a long way from home when you have a medical problem of your own! The Medial sailing ministries do fantastic work and a lot of it is at their own expense and donated time.
I would encourage any person or any corporation to please donate or provide sponsorship to MSM as all the money goes to keeping the yacht going and direct services helping people on these remote islands. The people are living a subsistance life with no electricity or anything. It must be fantastic to be part of a group that gives people back their sight! What about it P& O??
