Top 10 Noumea attractions

by P&O Cruises on April 14, 2010 · View Comments

Noumea is an important destination for P&O Cruises, not only for its visitor highlights but also as a key port for provisions and technical support when needed. Since New Caledonia is a French-speaking little corner of the world, perhaps the so-called ‘language barrier’ might be an issue that colours opinions of Noumea.

But ask people in the know here at P&O Cruises and you’ll find advocates for Noumea’s cruise destination gems. And when it comes to Noumea, their tip is to dig a little deeper and go beyond the immediate views of the surrounding port and city for some great holiday experiences.

To make it a little easier, we’ve come up with what we’re calling Noumea’s Top 10 attractions, all of which are within very easy reach during either a half or full day in town. Here they are:

1. Tchou Tchou train

An Italian-built road ‘train’ that is currently the best selling P&O Cruises shore tour. It combines an informative sightseeing experience with a fun French flavor, not to forget the beautiful French pastries available at the famous Ouen Toro Lookout.

1. NOU-005 The Yellow Tchou Tchou Train

2. Amedee Island Marine Reserve

Enjoy a trip on a comfortable catamaran to this famous islet on the world’s second longest barrier reef. Climb the lighthouse, snorkel in crystal clear water, see the famous, but harmless sea kraits (tri-coloured sea snakes) and participate in the best Tahitian floorshow in the Pacific. All of this on top of a sumptuous buffet lunch including French wine and tropical fruit punch. And it’s only a short trip from the port.

2. NOU-030 Amedee Island Marine Reserve 22. NOU-030 Amedee Island Marine Reserve

3. Big game fishing

Currently not available as a shore tour, but for the enthusiast, vessels abound to transport you beyond the barrier reef to target wahoo, yellowfin tuna and marlin. Specialist popping and jigging operators call Noumea home and can put you in touch with the king of the reef – the Giant Trevally.

3. Noumea Big game Fishing 23. Noumea Big game Fishing

4. Kanak Culture Experience

Learn fascinating stuff about the Kanak culture at the Tjibaou Centre designed by the world famous architect Renzo Piano, who also designed the Pompidou Centre in Paris. The Tjibaou Centre structure is just the beginning as you learn about the enthralling indigenous cultures of Melanesia.

4. NOU-100 Myth of the Kanak Culture

5. Independent Dining

Here’s a chance to dine like a Parisian without having to go all the way to France! Noumea imports the majority of its food direct from France and that means you can sample authentic French cheeses, wines and baguettes and finish with the best crepes this side of Montmatre.

5. NOU-105 Scenic Drive With Wine & Cheese Stop

6. Jet-skiing Adventure

Thrill-seekers need look no further than jet-skiing the harbours of Noumea. You can also take a guided tour around some of the most scenic waterways in the world.

6. NOU-090 Jet Ski 2

7. Bird Lovers’ Paradise

See New Caledonia’s national bird, the exotically named Cagou. The Botanical Gardens’ bird sanctuary and forest park tour takes in some very impressive Noumea landmarks as well as a rare Cagou feeding exhibit exclusive to P&O Cruises’ shore tour passengers.

7. NOU-I Botanical Gardens, Bird Sanctuary & Forest Park7. NOU-I Botanical Gardens, Bird Sanctuary & Forest Park - Cagou

8. Marine Life

Visit the Noumea Aquarium for an amazing array of marine species and none more impressive or rare than the mysterious Nautilus. This is one of only a handful of places in the world where you can see this enigmatic shellfish up close and personal. Don’t forget to visit the Fluorescent corals in a separate room – extraordinary jewels of the sea reflected by black lights

8. NOU-000 Countryside, City & Aquarium 2

9. Bay and Beach Hikes

If you have a little energy to burn, why not hike the beautiful bays and beaches of Noumea out to Ouen Toro lookout. As you leave the ship, stop in at the Sud Province Tourism office (at either Anse Vata beach or in town) for a local map that shows the tracks leading to the lookout. It is a great day’s outing if you’re reasonably fit. On the way back, sample some exquisite French cuisine like tuna tartare or a creme brulee.  You’ll have earned it after your walk!

9. Ouen Toro Lookout9. Ouen Toro Lookout 2

10. Locals’ Island Escape

Live like a Noumea local for a day by taking a trip to Duck or Escapade Island. This is a hidden gem and not many people know about it. Enjoy the sunshine, swim in the clear waters and dine like you’re in the Mediterranean for the day. Best of all, Duck Island and Escapade are two natural reserves. Fish are plentiful (blue parrots, coral trout, school of mulets or rabbit fish, barracudas etc… they are all there …. to be hand touched !

Give some of the Top Ten Noumea Delights a try and we look forward to your blogs on how you’ve been converted to Noumea’s delights as a cruise destination. And don’t be fazed by the so called language barrier. Mastering a few French phrases before you start your cruise will go a long way to communicating with the locals. You’ll find that many have some English language skills.

So, don’t be afraid to hop off the ship in Noumea. We think it’s easily one of the best destination ports on offer.

Personally the heart of Noumea I wasn’t that impressed but was very happy I did the Yellow tchou tchou train! It took you out of the hussle bussle and the views were beautiful. If I hadn’t done this I would’ve been a little disappointed, so glad I did that. I think a shore tour of any kind has got to be done to see a the beauty!

  • Melanie

I’ve been Noumea about 4 times now and we do something different every time. Yes I believe that the town itself is not great so I definitely recommend a shore tour.
Easily the best shore tour and close to my best cruise experience would be Amedee Island. It is AMAZING!! The island is just beautiful, you can go swimming straight off the beach in crystal blue waters, relax on the beach, go for nice walks, you HAVE to go out on the glass bottom boat, it is an incredible experience – then it becomes breathtaking when you jump over the edge and go snorkelling!! Some of the best snorkelling I’ve ever done!! then you go out and watch the shark feeding, the buffet lunch is wonderful and the tribal dancing is so entertaining. An amazingly well spent day so although its a bit pricey – its an experience that cannot be missed.
Duck Island is also a great day out – a fun jet boat ride over there followed by some good snorkelling – also recommend.
So I think the key to Noumea is book a shore tour before you go and make the most of the amazing island paradises that surround the not-so-amazing town :)

  • Jenny

But what to do when the ship arrives at 3pm and departs at 11pm?

    Tell us about that please…..

I enjoyed my day but what about the night what happens, I have heard that they bring ppl from the island aboard and have them entertain, is this correct

  • Jen

would really like to visit Amedee Island next time I go to Noumea. It looks fantastic. I actually have Amedee on a cruise video, but we were not aloud to go onto the Island, seas to rough to get tenders out that day.
And after Melanie’s recount of the day there. I am going to Amedee next time for sure.

  • ian tige

i went on a cruise at end of november 2009 and noumea was our first stop. we got the only native welcome to any of our stops, the scenery was beautiful, the lookout was wonderful, the tours are plentiful, the locals were friendly, the city was great, the beaches were, well can’t all be good.. overall i loved noumea and cannot wait to go back and visit, to the point of saying to my wife that another cruise must include beautiful noumea, to me the high point of our cruise stopovers. please don’t take it off the list of ports to visit….

  • Rona Patterson

I am on a scooter most of the time . Please let me know if it will be easy to get around . And on and off the Dawn .

  • Wanda Slingo

Hi Rona, I too have to use a scooter. All areas of the ship should be accessable and I intend to try a couple of shore tours too. I am on the Dawn from 14th Aug for 7 nights, when is your cruise?

  • http://PacificDawnblog Kay

Hi Rona and Wanda, I have seen people use them on the Dawn. You will not be able to use them on the tenders and you should be able to go down the gangplank with them. Only thing they will take up cabin space. You may need to place it between the beds.

  • steve

can anyone tell me if august is a good time to take the cruise on the jewel ( i like the sun) cheers steve

  • Vanessa Armstrong

Hi i am going on the Pacific Dawn departing Brisbane 26th June 2010.. are there any shore tours on Noumea for the afternoon/evening? Are there any fancy dress night? do people actually get dressed in fancy dress ? is it a good idea to have the sea sickness jab prior to the cruise or wait and see when on the cruise? so many questions… can anyone please help me…. THANK YOU, Vanessa

  • Karen

Hi Vanessa You will find P&O will offer you some tours and there will also be local operators as you get off the ship with some options. A lot of tours operate between 1 – 3 hours so there is time. Yes the passengers do get involced in Fancy dress. There is sure to be Island night, pirate night and then possibly Country and Western or Rock n Roll night. Also there should be 2 cocktail nights. As for sea sickness I have never had trouble. I cna recommend to take alson some tablets incase or if you are really suffering the ships doctor will give you an injection and you will be fine. Lastly you will have a blast, I have enjoyed every cruise and a final tip use the stairs and not the lift (it helps with the consumption of food and beverage) !! Enjoy!!

  • Lucy

Going on my fourth cruise soon, and never liked Noumea but this time i booked to go to Duck island and i think its going to be great, has anyone been there? what did you think?

  • Tracy

I am thinking of going in July 11 nights to the south pacific, is the weather alright at this time of the year. We are taking two children so are looking at the cheaper cabins lower is it worth paying more for a cabin higher up on the ship ?

  • http://PacificDawnblog Kay

Tracy, the cabins are all the same, your choice as to how high or low you want to be. By getting a cheaper fare it leaves you more to spend.

  • Debbie

we are heading on our first cruise on 30 oct on the dawn and are deciding on our shore tours, we were thinking of the yellow tchou tchou train, so its good to hear it is worthwhile, really looking forward to the cruise any other helpful infor welcome for newbies!!!

  • Robyn

We are going to New caledonia cruise Pacific sun on Cruise NO23 29th July Is the weather still warm enough to swim at this time of year or will I will need to pack winter clothing

  • P&O Cruises

    Hi Robyn,

The average temperature in Poum, your first destination, is 23 degrees during July which you can monitor in your cruise itinery. We recommend packing your swim suit just in case so you don’t miss out if the weather is slightly warmer.

You can also meet and chat with fellow passengers booked on your cruise by joining our Facebook Page Event for N023 Pacific Escapade

Let us know if you need any further information.

  • Jan

Hi, my daughter and I are going on our first cruise on Pacific Dawn on the 18th September to 25th. We stop at Noumea, Lifou and Vila can anyone please advise us what is the best things or tours or whatever to do at these points, we would like to get as much as possible in to the short time at these locations, including native souveniers to take home. We are both interested in indigenous cultures and hope to meet locals who can show us around or tell us some great stories.

  • http://pacificdawn Natalie

Hi Jan just quickly if you would like to include indigenous cultures on your trip I would rightly choose the Tjibaou Cultural Centre in Noumea. My family and I have visited that Centre just for that purpose.Just stunning!!
Then when in Vila maybe try the/The Secret Garden Outdoor Cultural Centre/My son who is 8 now and he still remembers holding a few animals, talking to the locals and especially playing with the gorgeous children.Dont forget in Vila thats where you do your shopping…Go visit the local markets where they sell their wares..They also do that when you disembark at the port…Dont forget the Duty Free as well. All in all just have fun.
    Good Luck Natalie
