How we love the weather

Hi Everyone,

You get a great appreciation of the ocean on a cruise with the combination of wind and weather. And our current cruise, W010N, is no exception thanks to a certain cyclone Ului hovering around North Queensland.

We get asked about cruising conditions all the time, so it’s only fitting that we explain how we approach itineraries when a there’s a bit of weather around. Every cruise is unique because the prevailing conditions are always different from cruise to cruise. Sometimes, we’ll sail out and home in calm conditions all the way but at other times, as with Pacific Dawn’s current cruise, conditions can be more dynamic.

We encountered a significant swell as we departed Brisbane and we will experience a bit more of that as we head for home. It takes some getting used to, particularly for people on their first cruise and, as you know, we have people on board who can help in this regard. And let’s not forget the fabulous tips posted on this very blog.

I am pleased that our passengers have enjoyed some idyllically tranquil days for our calls at Lifou and Vila, both very popular destinations. As we head home, you can be assured Pacific Dawn will be operating well within her capability. And, as usual, our approach is to navigate away from adverse weather and that is what we’ve been doing as we make our homeward run to Brisbane. We’ve actually navigated further south than usual on this leg of our cruise to keep a safe distance from weather patterns that are well north of Brisbane (and we have some very fancy equipment too which makes watching friends like Ului). Again as usual, we’ll be doing everything to keep passengers as comfortable as possible as we navigate our way home.

But this weather has meant a change to the normal disembarkation and embarkation arrangements for this Saturday 20th March, with our turnaround for the start of cruise W011N in Brisbane. We’ll now dock at Fisherman’s Island and not Portside Wharf. This is because there’s wind gusts at Portside on the Brisbane River will gust higher than the threshold 15-knots.

For those travelling on W011N, the embarkation process will still take place at Portside Wharf, but a shuttle service will then take you to Fisherman’s Wharf for boarding.

For more information, please visit the P&O Cruises Arrival and Departure page.

We look forward to welcoming you on board

Jane

Hi to all those onboard Dawn. If you are feeling queezy go to the bengal bar and have a Lime and gingerbeer. The bar man there made me one when i was feeling a little under the weather and within half an hour i was eating dinner. Your trip home will be better than out as you have your sea legs now!! Happy Days.

I’m boarding tomorrow on WO11N. My first ever cruise with 2 wonderful friends. Just hope they don’t have to close Townsville airport for Ului. We’d miss the boat….

Hi ,I was onboard cruise w010n too.The captain was very reasurring about the weather reports and kept us updated all the time.We were not worried at all.If your feeling sick ,don’t hesitate to get the injection. It works within hours and then you’ll be right for the trip.It might be expensive but its worth every cent. Bon voyage.

Wish I knew about that on the Saturday we left (13 March) 3 quarters of the ship had to have the needle to get rid of the nausea as we were in such terrible weather

  • leanne

Just came home on the Pacific Dawn, first timer. WO10N Yes got sick…went and got a needle and slept for 15 hours and than enjoyed the rest of the trip. Already looking for my next trip. However not in March. Still have my sea legs 2 days later…

i have just returned from the cruise wo10n and i was a first timer. Had an awesome time and never got sick at all. The Captain was great with all the up dates on the weather, He always had his passengers first and went more south coming home to avoid the cyclone. Well done Captain and the P&O crew. I will definately be going on another cruise.

Does anyone know of Undercover Security Parking close to Sydney cruise terminal? Closer than the Airport.

  • Carol Howard

Could anyone tell me whats the temperature, and the weather for the cruise going on the 7th April to noumea pentacost etc?

  • Judith

    Hi Leanne,
Im glad you had a wonderful trip, I am going on one in May. The places you went to, was it worth it any thing that we should know, do’s and don’ts.
    Thanks Judith

wow, WO10N was fantastic, Captain Neil kept everyone informed of “Ului”, unfortunate to miss Noumea, but there was lots to do on board. Very happy with everything on board, what a great ship, first time for my 3 children, they loved it. (cried when it was time to get off) certainly looking forward to another cruise.
Thanks again Captan Neil Turnbull for renewing our wedding vows, especially on my birthday. What loving memories our family has. Thanks to Lauren (Hotel secretary) as well.

Judith….don’t book tours from the ship. You will find it much cheaper to either…1. get a cab for the day, who will take you to all the sights & you can bargain with the cabby for cost. 2. get a tour once you are onshore. They are usually set up at the port. We got a 3 1/2 hr tour round Suva for $30 ea, whereas on ship they were charging $90 ea.

My daughter and myself were also on WO10N, and a big thank you to Cpt Neil Turnbull for making it such a pleasurable trip, in spite of horrid weather conditions. This was our first cruise and now am looking at another for next year. We met great fellow passengers, and the crew were marvelous, friendly and very helpful. Cant wait til 2011 for another fantastic voyage on the Dawn.
