Christmas on the High Sea’s

Hello Everybody,

I know it’s been a while since you’ve heard from me, but I’m back nice and refreshed after a long holiday to take over from Simon, who has moved to Pacific Jewel.

I had a great holiday. I went to Bonaire in the Caribbean with my sister for 10 days, took my nephew and niece along with my parents to Center Parcs in the Lake District where we did lots of biking and walking and of course spent lots of time with my mini Toby.

We have all been very busy since my return, both preparing Pacific Dawn for her new Brisbane base as well as getting ready for Santa! The lead up to Christmas was fantastic, but we had to also wrap over 1200 presents for children on the islands of Isle of Pines, Mystery Island, Lifou and Vila. It was a challenge, but we had great fun as the constant stream of little elves worked in my office for 5 days with Christmas music and festive cheer as we wrapped away. It was so incredible to see the children’s faces in the islands when we presented them with their presents. It made us all feel very humble for what we had in life.

Santa came aboard Pacific Dawn on the last tender boat departing Lifou. He was then escorted through the ship by Christmas elves and brought down into the Atrium where thunderous cheers of glee were heard from the over 300 children waiting in anticipation. It took him over two hours to pass presents to all the children on the ship. The atmosphere was tremendous and all the children grateful. The officers onboard also, as tradition with P&O Cruises, served the crew their Christmas lunch in the Crew Mess. We also sang Christmas carols for the passengers on Christmas Eve where everyone sung along with glowsticks lightening up the darkened theatre. A great Christmas was had by all!

I look forward to telling you about our New Year adventures, which look like a lot of fun.

We are booked on Pacific Dawn for Christmas 2010 – looking forward to Christmas Day at sea after visiting Isle of Pines, Ouvea, Mystery Island and Port Vila.

We had friends on this years Christmas cruise – and their glowing reports was one of the reasons we booked for 2010. What better way to spend Christmas!

PACIFIC DAWN TOTAL RIP OFF CRUISE
Well all I can say is that the Cruise I have just came back from was the worst cruising experiance that I have ever encountered in my many years of travelling the world.
I was looking forward to the 11Night Tasmanian Wonders Cruise departing Brisbane on Jan 30 2010 Cruise W005N.

The Ship had leaking seals on the propeller shafts and should have never been permitted to depart Brisbane, P&O put my and 1700 other peoples lives and safety at risk .

The Pommy Captain “Wells” thought he was a bit of a comedian and was making downgrading remarks about Australia and its people, anyone would think he was the captain of a prision ship heading from England to the Penal colony of Australia.

The Ship had a major defect and Divers were aboard the ship when it departed Brisbane, P&O Knew that the damage could not be repaired in the 31 hours allocated ,but they allowed the ship to Depart brisbane fully knowing that they would not be able to abide by the itinerary that the ship was supposed to provide.

The ship was delayed until 1900 hours ….The 31 Hours turned into 50 hours and the Itinerary was totally ruined for all on board.

Everyone was looking forward to their scenic cruise along the eastern coast of Tasmania and cruising Wine Glass/ Oyster Bay ,this sector became a night time cruise……late arrival into Burnie caused further cancellation of tours and travelling plans for all the passengers……The defective ship broke down twice whilst crossing Bass Straight and we were left to drift on two occassions with out any Engines , first occassion was at 2247hours then again at 0219 hours .

This delay caused the late arrival into Melbourne and futher tour cancellations………………..Great Rip Off P&O the $25.00 CREDIT TO OUR SHIP BOARD ACCOUNT WILL NOT KEEP ME QUIET.
YOU MUST THINK AUSTRALIANS ARE AN EASY TIUCH AND WILL PUT UP WITH ANYTHING…….GUESS WHAT…..?????
    YOUR WRONG…………………..!
    Meridith Schwencke “Customer Relations”
Your negative responce to my complaint will now be aired to the Media …..The Minister for fair Trading and other agencies in Australia that will act in regards to P&O total disregard for the safety of their passengers.
See you in the Papers and on the Television News Meredith Cabin P186

I was on the ship to Tassie, and yes it had some problems as do any hotels, food eating places and entertainment venues, so taking account of this the cruise in my opinion was fantastic. Sorry a limited and it was a limited amount of people had issues but most of us had a great time. Great Food, Fantastic Staff and the best entertainment. Congratulations Pacific Dawn. and the captain was quite funny. Good on you Captain.

Good reply Linda, there are always those whose role in life is to slam everything. Nothing will please them. The trouble is the media love a ‘bad news’ story and always ‘beat them up’ while they brush the ‘good news’ people aside. (The squeaky wheel gets the most oil.) From what I’ve heard – and I’m a member of several cruise forums – most people had a great time, although they were inconvenienced by the delays, which could happen anywhere, anytime and on any holiday with ANY form of transport. Apparently the weather was not too good for scenic cruising anyway!

  • Karen

Yep I too was on the Dawn for the Tassie cruise which was just fine….. Oh yes there was a couple of delays and probs. but this can happen anywhere, anytime – I think that maybe those who were whingeing would have been whingeing anywhere they went…. I’ve travelled a reasonable amount of times using various forms of travel and this was as good as any other…. and for goodness sake we were on a HOLIDAY so chill out, sit back and relax…. Hobart was a lovely little town with lots to explore and enjoy!

I would like to know where Michael got his information ’cause when you listen to shipboard gossip about what’s going on it is just unbelievable – we heard so many versions of what was happening it was ridiculous. Fire in the generator sparks and flames seen by someone…. some rudder problems…. leaking seals….. and so on and so on….
The only advise I could give those who weren’t happy would be to open up your wallets and spend a bit more if you want luxurious, first class accommodations with no problems, however I would almost guarantee they have their fair share of problems too.
GOOD ON YOU CAPTAIN AND ALL ON THE DAWN WE HAD A BLAST!!!!

  • Kelly

    Hey Karen,
Are you the famous Karen from the game show with your naughty husband Kerry. Good fun

  • Ralph

We also were on the ill fated trip. Being first time cruise participants I must admit we were looking forward to undertaking the trip which, we had specifically booked 8-mths before hand as we wanted to experience Tasmania.
Loved the Port Arthur experience, had a nice tour in Hobart and then looked forward to the scheduled Wine Glass bay experience.
As we all know this did not eventuate and as a consequence of the delays and the further break downs we also had a tour cancelled in Tasmania and Melbourne.
Granted break downs do occur, what I would expect is that sufficient compensation be made by P&O, not a $25 per person credit.
Gee, I read Karens comments about opening my wallet and travelling 1st class, it would not have mattered what class you travelled the ship would still have broken down. I also know how much we paid for the cruise, not an unsubstantial amount.
The experience certainly for us was dissapointing especially as we undertook the cruise to see Tasmania, which ended up being a rushed and shortened affair.

I’ve been on a few cruises in my time and have noticed that in the last few years that the cruise lines have been slipping down in customer service, punctuality etc. I must admit the best cruise I have ever taken was a Pacific Sun 7 night QLD cruise. The worst cruise I have ever taken was a 13 night fjian jewels on the Dawn Princess – delays, lies, bad weather, missed ports, lack of entertainment, average food and choice and a fair lot more.

Although I still endeavor to take more cruises – with P&O only.
