Expansion on Mystery Island

by pocruises on August 4, 2009 · View Comments

Today we were at Mystery Island, a firm favourite for anybody who has travelled around the South Pacific, but it was the first time I had the opportunity to get ashore here for a few years.

The centre of Mystery Island is a grass runway which stetches the length of the Island, which is used by small planes to bring in supplies and also the port officials who clear the ship on arrival.

It appears that there has been rapid expansion because this runway, located between coconut palms and beach, now has a terminal building; sorry guys, no sign of the duty free shop yet!

Traditionally the outrigger was used to access mystery Island from the mainland.

    Hi,
When I cruised in 1994 we were unable to visit Mystery Island for some reason and I have never met anyone who actually visited this Island. We are booked on a new year cruise and hopefully this time we might get there!

Hi Greta, we did mystery island last year. The locals come across from the main island and have stalls were they sell there goods. Also there is a nice beach, just a short walk from were the tenders let you off.

mystery island was amazing i hope it doesnt expand too much it was great that there was nothing there i hope tourism doesnt wreak it because that would be a shame

Hi Kay, thanks for your reply. On the New Years cruise we are on, we are at Mystery Island from 8am – 6pm. What did you do all day e.g. did you snorkel, go for a walk around the island, etc. ??

  • Greta

Brooke, Thanks for message. Would be interested in knowing what you did while you were there – we have a day there 8am – 6pm.

We swam, snorkled and they have some of their wares for sale. Just a relaxing day. The ship set up a cold drink and chip stall for the passengers to buy a drink and some nibbles.

When I was there in July there was a make shift coffee shop and the markets as well as fresh lobster for a very reasonable price. It was lovely just to swim and wander.

I would love to go again!

we had an awsum time there, we walked around the who island which took about 40mins then we had a look at all the stalls, then hired some snorkling stuff which was $20 ea, and just snorkeled for a few hours and chilled on the beach, it was beatiful!!

    Hi Greta,

We are going on NYE cruise also.
I am glad there isn’t a lot to do on Mystery Island, seeing that we are there on New Years Day!!! Maybe we just stay up all night and watch the sunrise???

  • Elissa

I’m going on the same NYE cruise, I cant wait! Staying up all night and watching the sunrise is a great idea, we’ll definately be doing that :)
