FAQ: Kids Clubs and Theme Nights

by andrewspd on May 19, 2009 · View Comments

Thank you so much for all your questions on the blog. As you can imagine, we’re extremely busy doing our day jobs on the ship, which makes it hard to answer all your queries individually.

I thought the best way to respond would be to collect a few of your questions on similar topics and answer them all in one whenever time allows.

So here goes!

Pirates

Theme nights:

“…could you let me know what the theme nights will be……so we can be prepared…..and how many formal nights. We have been on many cruises and just love them!!!”

Everyone loves our theme nights – they’re a huge hit! The actual nights change on each cruise so we only advise passengers of the schedule once they’re on board.

But I can tell you we usually have an Island Night and an Outback(country and western) night on each cruise. On Island Night everyone wears their sarongs, coloured tropical shirts & island hats, while on Outback night we see plenty of checked shirts and cowboy hats. If we have time on a cruise, sometimes we add a Rock and Roll night. And then there’s our “Pirates of the Pacific” show, which a lot of passengers love to dress up for.

Formal Nights

“We are sailing on the Dawn in two weeks and it is our first cruise. I have a question about the formal dinners please. Does my husband have to have a suit or will a navy jacket and grey slacks be suitable.”

We usually have two formal nights on our seven to 11 night cruises, and three formal nights on our 12 – 14 night sailings. The dress code for men on cocktail nights is a suit, or sports jacket and tie. Just follow the link below for more information: http://www.pocruises.com.au/html/pre-cruise-information.cfm#dress-at-sea. Please remember the dress code is encouraged for entry into the Palm Court Dining Room.

Christmas

Christmas and New Year Cruises:

“What happens on board the Xmas and NYE cruises? – Activities etc? …We will be on Ouvea for Xmas day, what happens there? Can we bring a small pressie for the kids to open on Xmas morning?”

Every year passengers rave about our Christmas activities, which include a Christmas village made out of candy and other yummy things, fun ice-carving demonstrations and a special visit from Santa with gifts for the children. We also celebrate with plenty of Christmas food including a traditional Christmas turkey dinner, plus we have carol services and various shows geared towards the holidays.

Activities for cruises are not released before we sail but we will certainly let you know about all our themed activities once you’re onboard, via our daily newsletter.

Of course you can bring presents on board for your children. Plus, you may want to bring something for the local children who usually come to greet you when the ship calls at their port! However, please remember some items may be barred by their customs and we do not suggest any food as gifts.

Kids Club

Kids Club

“In relation to kids club, first in first served, is this on a daily/session basis or does this mean when numbers are reached no other kids will be accommodated for the entire cruise?”

When you board your cruise, the kids’ clubs will be open for registration so that’s the time to put your child’s name down for the access to the club throughout the cruise.

We can only accommodate a certain number of children in the clubs on each cruise although we do gear our staffing levels in advance to reflect the number of children sailing in each age group. Even if we reach our kids’ club limit for registrations on the first day, not all children turn up daily. So if you don’t get your child in when you board, it’s worth checking back during the cruise to see if there’s space for them that day in the kids’ club.

“When we booked originally there were age restrictions for cabin occupancy, ie adult with minors during the night (I guess)…I noticed that quite a few cruises now allow the minimum age to be 16 with younger children in room. then just now in the blog something about age restrictions changes coming into force after sept 09. just asking for a little clarification please.”

Only children, travelling with parents, who are 18 years old on day of sailing can hold a cabin in their name.

From September, young cruisers will have a new place to hang out when a new youth headquarters is introduced for passengers aged between 11 – 17 years. HQ will offer activities including air hockey, karaoke, sport tournaments and hip hop dance classes. There will be opportunities for 11 – 14 years olds to participate in separate activities to those aged 15 – 17 years to cater for their interests.

I hope this really helps you with some of those curly questions.

Stay tuned for more blog posts.

    Hi Andrew,
Thanks for this helpful information. I am going on the Melbourne Cup cruise this year and as it is a six night cruise, will there only be 1 formal night and what sort of theme nights will there be if any?
Is there anyone else out there going on the Melbourne Cup cruise this year?

  • Kim

Hello we are going on the 11th July cruise on the Pacific Dawn… Is anyone else going?

  • Meg

My question is about beach towels. I believe that beach towels are available on board, however are they available to take off the ship when we dock at various places? Will I need to pack some for these day trips off the boat?

  • Jackie

    Hi Meg,
No don’t take towels we did and nearly took up another bag, and next time we can go lighter as there are abundant towels and yes you can take them on the islands with you. You only have to ask your cabin steward and when you are finished with them there is a trolley for the dirty/wet ones then you just get another. Wish we had known this as they take up a lot of room. Have a great time on your cruise, you will enjoy it.
    Jackie

  • Kym

    Hi Meg,

A friend of mine has recently cruised on the Dawn and bought back some of the daily newsletters. On the back of one of them it talks about pool towels, as one of the stops was Isle of Pines. It reads, “We kindly request that you bring your Pacific Dawn pool towels back from the beach with you. For your convenience, there will be a towel return bin on board where you disembark the tender”.

  • Jen

My last cruise I took my own beach towel and did not use it. I used the ship towel. When boarding the ship from a day out there was a large linnen basket that all the towles were put into. Towels were wet and a little sandy. On the cruise DVD there are the ship towles at all the ports. I hope this is the same I will not take my own beach towels next cruise in January 2010.

Not much room in cabin for drying wet towels and cozzies. I stayed on deck until they were all dry before I went to my cabin and got ready for dinner.

When we boarded from a beach tender there was plastic on the floor over the carpet.

I would like to know about children services. Is there themes or fancy dress for children – Shark Shack age?

I really like to read all the bloggs and get information from the P & O staff. Fantastic job P & O.

  • Tracie

If the theme night is Outback Country/western does anyone go as Indians? My family’s gone and got costumes, but don’t want to bring them along if it’s a typical Aussie country night! (cruising 2/7)

  • Meg

Thank you so much to all that helped me out. I was thinking exactly as you mentioned….beach towels take up so much room and what do we then do with wet ones in a limited space!!

On another note…..Did anyone use the self service laundry? Do the machines take $1 or $2 coins?

And another question……We have not been able to purchases snorkels (off season makes it hard to find these things!!). I believe there are some on board to purchase. Has anyone done this and if so how much should I anticipate in costs?

    I appreciate any comments. Thanks.

  • Meg

Thanks for the help. We hope to enjoy it as it is our first cruise. The children are asking to get on the website every day to check out cruise cam!

  • Meg

    Thanks heaps.

  • Cheryl

I am travelling on the 21st July with my grandmother who turns 80 on this cruise and 4 of my kids twins 6, 7 and 12 yr old turning 13 on 29th july will he to move up in to the teenage lounge for the last 2 days or can he stay with his sister in the shark shack?
Also looking forward to meeting anyone else travelling on this date.

  • Jen

Last time I went there were a few Indian feather head peices. It is on the Cruise DVD passengers can buy of their cruise. This would be great to see a full costume. Anything goes, it’s all about fun. If I were on that cruise my kids & I would love to see this. Go for it, you will never forget it.

  • Jen

I to am looking for snorkels – I was going to try a sport store next like super Amart sport. Last cruise I went on all the hired out snorkle equiptment was hired out on first day, they were for sale in the onboard shop for $100 I think this included flippers, snorkle & goggle set. As I have to buy 5 sets, I will buy from home. This was 4 years ago, price will be a bit more now.

As I am not going until January 2010 I will buy before I go. Look at all the other comments on the blogg about snorkels further down.

As for laundry I used the Iron for free. Alot of people qued to use the laundry. As I like to holiday I didn’t do laundry until I went home. My husband sometimes got the cabin stewards to do his for a fee. They came back like they were dry cleaned.

    Don’t know about laundry coins.

  • Meg

Thanks Jen. I have found full snorkel sets for $100 in Rebel Sport however they didn’t sell snorkels seperately. I have read through some of the blogs and have had some of my questions answered. Thanks again.

  • Sandy

    Hi Meg.
The laundry takes $1 coins. We where on the May 16 cruise and I got snorkelling stuff from Big W for $13.00 on board u pay $49.95 just to hire and even more to buy.Pauls Arehouse also sell them

    Have a great cruise
    Sandy

  • Meg

Thanks Sandy for the info. I hadn’t thought to check Paul’s Warehouse.

  • Alison

    Hi there,
All of my family (16 in total) have organised a trip in Dec 09…there are 9 (kids) cousins…..8 of them fall into the 7-12 kids club and my daughter is 6 turning 7 in April and has been told she will have to go in the 3-6….. How awful this is going to be for her to see 8 cousins go in one kids club and her the other – apparently no flexibility on this!!!

This trip has taken lots of planning for all of us to be together….

Can’t believe it really and has put a damper on the whole holiday for me!

She wants to be with her cousins!

    Has anyone experienced this????

  • Jen

Hi Alison the childrens club ages are changing again in September 2009
    Turtle Cove 3 – 6 Shark Shack 7 – 10 Teen Lounge 11 – 17

Hope this doesn’t split up your kids to much. They dont have to spend alot of time in the childrens clubs if they don’t want to. I have read other bloggs and it sounds like children love the childrens clubs. I hope my children like it. Lucky the will all be in the same children centre as they are 7, 8 & 9yo.

  • Alison

    Hi Jen,

These are the age groups I’m aware off….my daughter is 6 3/4 but they’re adamant she goes into 3-6 without any reasoning except thats there policy..

    Just seems a shame….given it’s a family environment, thought P & O would be alot more accommodating..

  • vivian

    Hi Kim,
I am going with another 23 wonderful people all of them friends ,
    can’t wait.
    See ya there

  • Katie

    Hi experienced cruisers,
Just wondering about what sort of clothes to pack and also which clothes to wear on the first day. Are jeans acceptable on board, and if so, can they be worn for dinner, or is this too casual for dinner??
    thanks,
    Katie

  • Jackie

    Hi Katie,
We just wore everyday stuff I wear fisherman pants everywhere they are so cumfy and I wore them most of the time, we took jeans but never wore them. We ate at the restuarant only once and didn’t get over dresses girls just had nice 3/4 pants and shirt, hubby had shorts and shirt and I of course had fisherman pants and top. During the day and on islands we wore 3/4 pants track style ones but no one on our cruise ever looked out of place with what they wore. Just be normal your on holidays and ejoy, don’t pack to much you wont need it all.
    Hope this is helpful.
    Jackie

  • Jen

There is always a formal night. It is up to individual if they get dressed up or not. One cruise I went on we didn’t get dressed up and went to an alternative dining, our waiter said we could have still come to dining room if we did not get dressed up. There is usually country & western night and Island night onboard I usually wear a sarong.

I have purchased jeans for my children for their first cruise coming up in January 2010. We have all their christmas presents already and alot of clothes for the cruise. Jeans, belts, evening shirts. I will mix n match their clothes. My boys are 7, 8 & 9 yo. They will wear jeans to dining room, I may take their black polished school shoes or get some nice shoes to wear to dinner.

Don’t take to many clothes, you wont need alot. I always take more than I actually wear.

Don’t take beach towles, you can take ship towles on shore tours. You may need a beach bag or back pack to put all your towles, camera, sun cream etc etc in.

    Have a blast.

  • Jen

Hi Tracie, did you take your indian outfit on your cruise. Blogg when you get back and let us know how your cruise was.

  • Jen

Hello, we are going on the Pacific Dawn on 21st July. Does anyone know if there will be any dance classes onboard? If so, what type of dancing?

  • sarah

Hi can anyone help with with tipping, I have been given different advice. I was told $10 a day per person for each of room steward and table stewerd is deducted from your smart card amounting to $640 for 16 day cruise but that can be cancelled. I was also told that between $2.50 and $3 per person for table and room stewerd is the amount to pay. I would appreciate advice thanks

  • admin

    Hi Sarah,

There is a section on tipping/gratuities found in the Onboard the Ship section of the P&O website. You can read it here.

Also, it is best to place questions on any topic on the discussion section on the Facebook Fan Page. That way eveyone can search and find what they need as it grow.

    Enjoy!
    P&O Cruises

  • Sharon2

Hi Sarah – you can go to the pursers desk as soon as you get on board and cancel the tipping. Then it will be up to you on who you want to tip and for how much. We tipped our cabin steward and waiter – there was 4 of us in the cabin for 10 nights – tipped $100 each. That was about the norm for others that we spoke to.

  • Natasha

Hello fellow cruisers. Am very excited we have just booked our first cruise , sailing on the Pacific Dawn 7 nights in the South Pacific ,late April 2010. Seems like ages away but I am doing as much research as I can. I was wondering if anyone can tell me about the cocktail nights & themed nights. Do kids go to these ?, we have two girls ages 12 / 14 at time of cruising . If not are there activities arranged in the kids room on the same nights ?

  • Renai

Hi, we are going on the Xmas cruise 2009. Has anyone been on an xmas cruise before?

  • Sharon

    Hello,

We are going on the Christmas cruise and was wondering do we have to register for our son to go to the youth HQ or do you only have to register when you are on board for the younger children’s club?

  • http://faq Linda

I have been told that there are 3 dining times of 5.30, 6.00 and 8.30. Is this correct or can you book any time?

  • kez

hi just wondering if you have to pay for your lunch on the island or does it include lunch,do you go back to the ship for lunch ? and also if your ship doesnt leave till two and you board at 11 can you use the facilities and do they provide lunch. these answers will be a big help thankyou

  • http://tp_webb@hotmail.com terese

    Hi Kez

You would only pay for lunch if you went into a privately run establishment. They advise you to return any time to ship, you can board and disembark as many times as you want.
Sometimes they have island bbq’s for everyone.
Hope you have a great trip. we did and were going again in January.

  • Debbie

    Hi,
My family and I have just booked a cruise (out first one) and looking forward to it. Just have a question about the shore tours. On the cruise that we are on two of the ports have shore tours. I was wondering are you still able to get of at the other ports and does it cost money to get off even though there may be no shore tours and are you able to just get off without attending a shore tour? Hope you can help me.
    Thanks

  • Anita

You can get on and off the ship as much as you like, there is no charge and no you don’t have to do a shore tour.

  • Debbie

    Thank You for the reply.

  • April

I’m going on a cruise in feb 2010 for my 18th.
I was told that when boarding the ship you are issued with a cruise card that restricts you to sections of the ship depending on your age.
I turn 18 the day after i board, will i be issued with a card that restricts me?

  • http://PacificDawnblog Kay

If I were you I would ring P&O and ask them about your card because the day you sail you may be given the under 18 card that stops you from buying alcohol based drinks. They have twocards on board and they are different colours so the staff know what age group you are in.

  • Karen

    Hi,

We purchased a snorkel and goggles from ebay for about $25 for each set including postage, this was without the fins, but from all the comments I have read, most people say not to worry about the fins and just use reef shoes.

  • Shannon

    Hi,
Im going on my first cruise on 15th July 2010, the Fiji Adventure – 14 night cruise!! =) So just makin sure I am correct with this, there will be 3 formal nights??? And also would you be able to tell me what theme nights there is going to be – Island and Countrry/Western etc etc????
    Please reply…
    Thanking you!! =)

  • http://elwynlin@bigpond.net.au Lin

    Hi Shannon
we did this cruise in 2009 (it was fantastic). We were told there would be 3 formal nights but only ended up having 2 – not sure why, but didn’t bother us any way. We had an Island night and a Pirate night. Whichever they do, the shop will have bits and pieces to sell to and you can pick up things in port for Island night.
    Have Fun! Lin

  • Denise

Looking forward to Pacific Dawn cruise out of Brisbane on 10th April 2010. Travelling on Plaza Deck, love to meet any of our neighbours. First time out of Australia, so immensely chuffed at the thought.

  • steve

Hi April, P&O will give you a child card to start of with and at one past midnight on your birthday go to the purses deck and they will give you your adult card, easy as that.

  • Debbie

    Hi all,
Goin on a cruise in july 2010. Just wondering how much drinks are??

  • kylie

Hi,am wondering if you can give me a bit of information on private function room for a wedding reception (we are getting married in vanutau when we dock)
    and info on wedding cakes?
    thanks heaps
P.S 165 days to go wohoooo

  • debbie

cant answer your question but when is your crusie, sounds close to when we go, and getting married at vanutau is so exciting for you, all the best.

  • debbie

we are going on our first cruise on 30th oct for 7 days on the dawn and are just wondering how many and what sort of theme nights will there be. if anyone can help!!??

  • Dave

    Hey Debbie,

There should be at least 4 theme nights on board, your cruise, these should be – Island night , Rock’N”Roll / 70’s night, Country & Western night & Cocktail (originally known as formal) night.

If they also have a show on board – Pirates of the Pacific, then there will be a pirate theme night included as well…

So dig out an old floral / hawaiian shirt / outfit , an old checkered flannelette shirt and you’ll fit right in…………….

For your cocktail night good dress clothes should suffice (what you would wear out to dinner/party)

The wonderful & kind folk at P&O may be able to confirm these theme nights closer to your cruise date.

  • Dana

Hi Kim, we are very excited at the prospect of our first cruise. We are going on the Pacific Dawn departing Brisbane on Saturday 10th July. We are from Perth. Have you been on a cruise before?

  • Judith

Hi Dana, We have just got back from been on the Dawn June 5th, we both had a wonderful time, cruised up to Cairns and back. Our first one together and really enjoyed it. You can do as little as you like or try every activity that is on offer or just relax at the bars. Drinks are reasonably Coronas $6.95, can of xxxx gold $5.95, cans of soft drinks, $2.50 and my favourite cocktails at the cocktail bar downstairs with the bartender lady Joe, $11.95. You will have a great time. Enjoy
We are now booking our next one.
    Judith

  • Judith

Hi Meg. Beach towels are supplied and yes you can take them off the ship, but they ask that you bring them back with you. We have just come back from a cruise up to Cairns June 5 had a great time, and so will you.
    Judith

  • Judith

Hi Tracie, Have just got back from a cruise up to Cairns, there was a western/country night, didnt see anyone dressed as an Indian but that doesnt stop you from doing that, its all about letting your hair down and having fun. Enjoy
    judith

  • Judith

Hi Katie, just back from a cruise, and yes you can wear jeans to dinner, I did. You can dress them up or down, whatever mood you are in. No thongs at dinner. I wore jeans and sandshoes on my first day, nice and comfortable, because its a long way in line to check-in. We arrived at 11.00am but didnt go and check-in until 1.30pm when the line was shorter, we sat in a bar and had a few pre-cruise drinks.
    Judith

  • Judith

Hi Jen, Just got off the Dawn, yes they had dance classes, Ballroom, Hip Hop . It was fun.
    Judith

  • Judith

Hi Sarah, Just arrived back from a cruise, They recommed $7.50 per person every day. They charge your smart card. If you dont want them to do that, you have to go down the Promenade Deck and tel l them not to and they will remove that. Then you can tip as much as you want, to whom ever you want. Say your room steward is doing his or her job above average and really looking after you, will tip whatever you think. We only tipped our room steward. You do whatever you think is right, there is no set fee. Enjoy
    Judith

  • Claudia

We are going on the 3 day comedy cruise Aug 26/27/28. Because it is a short cruise – can you please tell me what the “theme night” will be so that we can bring out outfits with us?
Also which comedians will be on the ships for the 3 nights? We have been told “Dave “Hughesy” Hughes” can you confirm?
    Thanks – Claudia

  • noel francis

Hi im going on the dawn this month leaves on the 24th for 11 days i was wondering if they will be having a pirates night as i just spent 100 bucks on a costume i just hope they will be having one after buying the costume.

  • noel francis

Hi just go and see them at the pursers desk when you get on board and tell them you dont want any tipping right from the start i mean we are in australia not the US. We shouldnt have to tip i mean the price of the trip is enough to have to pay out.

  • Cazz

    gday
was wanting to know about any celebrity chefs on board the Dawn in oct- will ther be any & what sort of costs?
Cheers from the oct 10 honeymooner

  • Liz

Hi can anyone tell me if the new child free haven “Oasis” is the old Dome. We are planning another cruise on the dawn next year and would hate to not be able to take our kids to the dome during the day to relax and play cards etc. They are not kids clubbers so we entertain ourselves and a couple of hours in the dome playing card games was fantastic. Cheers

  • Sandee

The Oasis is aft on Deck 10. Don’t worry, the Dome is still the Dome!

  • Simon

    Hi All

We are also going on our first cruise – same ship & date as you… it’s our 25th Wedding Anniversary. So excited & looking forward to it… other friends have told us bits & pieces but expect we will find different things. Been told there is so much to do onboard every day :-) I intend to dress casually but take bits for the standard theme nights.
