New Menus

by thomaspd on March 24, 2009 · View Comments

Good morning,

I am the Food & Beverage Director onboard Pacific Dawn. I am responsible for about 330 crew members working in the bars, galleys and restaurants. They certainly keep me busy!

Just this cruise we introduced our new dinner menus onboard.

dinner-menu-1

This new initiative ensures that our most popular dishes remain on the menu every day. I thought it would be an enormous challenge to introduce the new menus across the ship, because we have had to train all our cooks, and dining room staff, but it has been smooth

Hi Thomas, the new menu looks fab…
I will be sampling each one.

I am a diabetic, and the meals have always been great and not put my blood sugar levels up. (Diabetic meals that is..)

I was on Pacific Sun in Jan-Feb and they had a new lunch menu .
there was plenty to choose from , you didn’t have to have the same meal twice.

    kind regards, Lorraine

  • Megan

I am looking forward to trying all the new meals available in May. Thanks for all your hard work.

  • Gail

hi Thomas, was wonderful to meet you on the W909 cruise just gone, but I have to say I`m not a big fan of the new a la carte menu, the new lunchtime menu had more variety, and I would like to see the food theme nights re-introduced (e.g French Night),apart from that the food was wonderful!!!

  • samantha birch

hi thomas the food was fantastic hope 2 c u on other cruises really love the pasta sam xoxo luv u lol :) bye

  • Kym

    Hi There,

We are cruising with Pacific Dawn on 20th Oct, and was wondering what the children’s menu looks like?

    Regards

    Hi all,
Great blog site – can you upload a copy of the latest “Patters” – I’ve lost mine from my last cruise on the Pacific Dawn.
    Thanks

  • Janine

    Hi John,
You say that you’ve lost the latest “Patters” from your last cruise on Pacific Dawn. I am curious to know what “Patters” is.
    Regards

  • John Swinsburg

I am sorry but travelled on Pacific Dawn W817 Mar to Jun 08 and hae lost my Newsletters that are left under the door each night. I got mixed up with Princess Patters from Pacifi Princess that we have also cruised on. But if you have a copy of the latest Newsletters from Pacific Dawn I would be very appreciative. I am about to book on Pacific Jewel as this ship will be based in Sydney now instead of the Pacific Dawn . . . is that right?

  • Tracy

    Hi Thomas,

The food sounds amazing can’t wait to try as much as i can, LOL. The kids are wondering if there is food that they will like? (plain eaters i’m afraid). They do have one concern, that is you won’t have enough tomato sauce!!!

    Cheers :-)
    Tracy

  • Mark Lewis

    Hi Thomas

As per some of the other questions asked………..I am taking my kids for their first cruise early next year, can you tell me what is available to them if the wonderful 4 course dinner is not to their liking. I realise for lunch etc with the buffet they will have plenty to choose from but wasn’t sure what we could do if they didn’t take to the dinner menu.

    Mark

  • Ashlee

Hi Thomas, I am coming on my first cruise in December this year. I am 14 year old and was hoping that you could please provide me with the sort of food that is available for kids onboard. I too am a fussy eater and really only eat plain types of foods (chicken nuggetts, spagetti bol, tuna bake etc). Are you able to cater for my food likes/dislikes or should I pack away some biscuits and chips to get me through the week.

  • Andrea

We are coming up for our 3rd Cruise in just under 7 weeks time, and were wondering if Elizabeth from Vanuatu is working on the Dawn. When we last saw her, she was on Pacific Sun in the Food and Beveridge Department.

  • robyn grove

Dear Thomas, I hope you have ordered L-O-T-S of strawberries for the 05/05/09 cruise, cos our little Madelaine L-O-V-E-S them …. and it’s the only fruit she eats.. thanks robyn ps looking forward to partaking of all your other cullinary delites too

  • http://p&o Jenelle

Hi, i will be cruising with my daughter and some friends march 13th 2010.
The day we sail is my daughters 13th birthday. Is there anyway of organising a cake for her.
    Thanks Jenelle

  • robyn grove

Hi Jenelle, Your daughter will be plesantly surprised to find balloons and birthday poster on your cabin door when you arrive as P & O already have all your dob details. For a cake just speak to some of the dining room staff through the afternoon, let them know when you will be dining and they should be able to help you out. The cake may not have your daughters name on as they usually order that in advance but be assured there will still be candles and prob sparklers too. Enjoy your cruise. Actually just reading back your original message, you may be able to organize a cake through customer service by phone seeing as you are not sailing till next year happy cruising Robyn

  • Jeff

Hi Janelle, I spent my last birthday on the Pacific Sun in March 2009. You wake up to find a Happy Birthday poster and balloons on your cabin door. The cabin staff wish you a happy Birthday all day long and are so friendly, especially Mary on our deck. I too are going on the Pacific Dawn on March 13th, 2010 with my family and can’t wait as we had a fantastic time on our last cruise. We will see you in March 2010.

Keep on cruzin’, Jeff, Gold Coast

  • Jeff

Hi Janelle, My family will be on the same cruise as u. We will have two kids with us, both 14. How old are your kids. They will enjoy the cruise wether they go to the kids or teenagers club or not. Plenty to do on board all day long. If you read this please reply, We love meeting new people. If there is anyone else on the March 13, 2010 cruise I would like to hear from you.
    Jeff from the Gold Coast

  • Jeff

Hi everyone, sorry I got my dates wrong. My cruise departs on 6th March 2010 and arrives back on 13th March. One week less to wait.
    Gold Coast Jeff

    Thanks Robyn(:
You have been a great help

    Jenelle

  • Narelle

    Hi everyone,
How does anytime dining work? Are there any best or worst times to go? When we last cruised, we had first seating which was great for us but I have to say we missed a lot of fabulous sunsets. Maybe this time we canwatch them all.

  • Vicki

    Hi janelle

    I work for p&o cruises

hi everybody, i returned from from cruise w913. It was 11 nights on the Pacific Dawn what a beautiful liner.I have also been on Pacific Sun I did prefer the set dining times they had on the Sun for dinner most of the time i forgot to book for dinner.Im hoping to go on Princess Jewel in April 2010 it will be interesting if it is any different to her twin.Love to hear from anybody who went on w913 cruise. I travelled alone but i had lots of fun and met some great people. Sharon

  • Jeff

The Kids with us on our last cruise back in Feb loved the menu. Always a good variety, and the idea of being able to order a bowl of french fries as a side dish proved popular with young kids, teenagers and even adults. The service was first class and the food staff friendly and efficient.
    Well done P&O.

  • Fiona

    Hey there Jeff
Are you booked on 2 cruises, Jan 23, 2010 and March 6th, 2010. You are lucky. I can only afford to go on 1 only per year if I’m lucky. I was thinking of booking on the 6th March as I haven’t been to New Caladonia or Vanuatu before and I would like to see them.

  • Jeff

    Hi Fiona
Yes we are going on 2 cruises next year. My wife, her sisters and the kids want to go onthe Qld cruise as no passport is required and the kids love the lagoon in Cairns. On the other hand, were booked to go on the Island cruise last Nov when my son broke his arm a week before and needed surgery, therefore I had to stay home with him.So that is why we’re going on 2 so close together. We wanted to go on the Pacific Dawn and we wanted the warm weather as well. My wife has been on 6 cruises and I have only been on the 1, and now I’m hooked.
    Jeff (Gold Coast)

  • Jen

Hi Thomas, maybe you could put a sample childrens menu on this blogg. I know all buffet food for breakfast and lunch our children will have a large selection to chose from so no worries there but at dinner is it a set menu for the children in the dining room? We have 7, 8 & 9yo children.

  • karen badrock

Will the this boat be sailing on the 4th June or is it out of action because of the swine flu what will happen to the passengers that have booked there holiday

  • Kaye

    Hi Kym,

We are also cruising on Pacific Dawn 20 Oct.
We will also have our 2 children (ages 12 & 4) traveling with us.

    Cheers,Kaye

  • allison

Yum – looking forward to trying some of these delicious items..
Yes – could we please have a copy of the childrens menu as well, my kids have asked what they eat – goodness knows they will try and avoid vegetables at all costs..
    thanks

  • Daiquiri

We cruised P&O 2 years ago with 3 children – 21/2, 5 & 7. There was a good children’s menu, including pasta and other goodies. But wonderfully, the kitchen was happy to serve from the adult menu at children’s sizes. My grandson, intruigued by soup he could “see through”, had the consomme every night.
So absolutely do not worry about how fussy your children are. The kitchen will rise happily to the requests.

  • Emily

The food is so delicious and presented so nicely i’m an apprentice chef and am inspired by all the food that come out… the food and ice carvings are so magnificent it just shows how much opportunity there is to do the most amazing food and sulptures and your only limited by your imagination. i now wish to work on a cruise ship once qualified and have more experience

  • Doodleboy

    Hi Thomas
This one Menu looks good, but can we have some more info on food on other parts of the ship, and yes an example of the kids menu please.

    Cheers

  • Jeff

    Hi Matt
I don’t know about the captain, but I would love to see a photo of your Pacific Dawn scaled model. Send pic to jeffthompson5@hotmail.com
    Jeff, Gold Coast

  • Narelle

    Hi Thomas
We will be cruising on the Dawn in December and can’t wait. Any chance of you considering looking into some Queensland wines for the menu??
Queensland does some really great wines. Robert Channon Winery in Stanthorpe does some really nice wines.

Looking forward to dining with you.

    Gary and Narelle

  • Vanessa Brown

I was wondering is YO YO still on board he was our cabin steward on main deck?
Is Mae and Larry still in the dinning room??? we traveled on the Pacific Dawn in January 2008..
.We have been on a cruise every year since 1999.. cruising is the only way to holiday! Fairstar x2 fair Princess x1 Pacific Sky x 2 Pacific Sun x 2 this will be our 2nd time on the Dawn… The drinks were watered down alot on the last cruise so I hope they won’t be in July!!

  • Julie Wilson & Richard McCaig

Hi Vanessa , we will be on the Pacific Dawn on the 31st August 2009. We are going for our honeymoon as we`re getting married on the 30th August 2009. We can`t wait , this will be my second cruise and Richards first.

  • Michele Percey

Hi Vanessa, my family are travelling on the same cruise as you are. We are going with 3 other families. Can’t wait !!

  • Katie

    Hi there,

I am finally going on my first cruise on 17th August – Pacific Dawn . Cannot wait…
but am a bit anxious about the food issue due to being vegan. That means I do not eat any animal fats at all, any dairy, any eggs or any meat products. Pretty much just fruit, vegies, grains, nuts and legumes.
Will require soy milk too. There are many mainstream wines which are vegan (not produced using any animal products) and also wondering if these are identifiable on your wine lists.
Are there any vegans who can let me know how they were catered for??
I was thinking of bringing some nuts, etc with me or is this not allowed??
Thanks, (and sorry, upon re reading this I look VERY fussy)
    katie

  • Sue B

have you told p&o as they will cater for you, either ring your travel agent or p&o customer care. that way you will be able to eat in the rest. yes you can take food with you but you can not bring it back home off the ship. there is allways lots of fruit and stuff like what you said on board. also i can let you know about the laptop as im taking mine and we go 21st july. wireless is good i use it all the time. as of price shop around as price varise alot from each carrier. i hope this helps.

  • KAY

Hi Katie, have you put in your request for your meals with your travel agent. Last year in the shop on board they had bags of dried fruit and nut mix for $5. We take our own snacks away with us for the children as they are fussy eaters. The anytime dining on Lido deck has a variety of salad vegies at lunch and dinner. Soups as well, crackers and fresh fruit for all 3 meals and dried fruit at breakfast.

  • Katie

    thanks Sue and Kay,

Yes my travel agent has requested vegan for me. This request does show on our cruise personaliser details thankfully.
Thanks for those specifics of what is in the meals, shops.
So P and O don’t mind you taking food on board??? I read elsewhere on these threads that people take slabs of coke. I would be a bit embarrassed trying to smuggle something so big in, or is this just the norm??
Can you recommend any other forums about our cruise?

  • Fiona

I read in the P&O book that there is a charge for the Steakhouse. Is it a full charge for the meal or part cost to cover a dearer meal. How much is the charge.

  • Jen

Steakhouse was $15 cover charge pp when I went on my last cruise in 2005/2006 NYE. Don’t know current prices. You must ring and book a table.

  • Chris

This menu looks fantastic.can’t wait. Traveling on cruise leaving Sydney 13th Oct.

  • allison

    Hi everyone
Just got back on Tuesday and remembered people asking about the childrens menu.
A few things on it are: spaghetti bolognaise, fish fingers (actual fish battered), nuggets, sausages, macaroni cheese, different options each day including roast meat and veg etc. most served with potato, peas, veges, and chips. Although refreshing to note, not all plates had chips on them….
Dessert was ice-cream with topping, mudcake, fruit.
Kids dinner is held at 4:30 to 5:15pm each day, many parents didn’t realise they had a separate sitting for those kids who wanted to eat early and go back to kids club etc.
But the kids enjoyed their own dinner with friends from kids club. A parent had to attend with them. Our kids loved not having to sit at a table with us at “grown up” dinner time and could have theirs early and head down to the kids club to the activities. without boring mum and dad about! lol…

  • Jeff

    To P&O
I'm booked on the 7 day Queensland cruise, no W004N on 23 Jan 2010, but u do not have it listed in your link to Events !
    Jeff

  • Ali

Am just wondering have not seen any beverage price lists wondering if anyone can tell me average prices for drinks (ie Alcohol) Thanks

  • Julie

    Hi
After just returning from cruising on the Pacific Dawn for 16 nights I was not impressed with the new menu. I found it boring even though one side was changed each night to me there was not enough variety. If you didn’t like what was on the new menu you went for the set menu I ended up having the same main course 3 times and another twice. The old menu was a lot better at least the whole menu changed every night not just one side.

  • http://PacificDawnblog Kay

Hi Julie, I just cruised on the same cruise. We eat up in the Cafe de sol. In the last 10 yearts they have stopped changing the menu for lunch and dinner each day. You always had a variety.in those days. Did you end up with out of pocket expenses for your trip home. We lost our pre booked flights and I am waiting to hear from P&O about being reimbursed. I have cruised 12 times and this trip was one disaster after another. We had the ceiling fall in in the cabin, the leaks throughout the ship. The lost time in ports due to engine trouble that was ongoing since june, as my parents cruised then and missed a port of call. Lifts not working for days. This ship was fine last year in april when we cruised on it. It needs to go into dry dock now for major overhaul as it is going downhill maintenance wise.

  • dave

  • jennifer stevo

my family was wondering will Captain Lorenzo be on the Dawn for the 15 th November criuse

  • Kym

    HI There,
Have a look at the Pacific Dawn ship from the dropdown menu on the P & O website. When you click on the Dining section, you will see a part you can open up & it will show you Breaky, Lunch & Dinner menus.

  • admin

Unfortunately no, Captain Lorenzo will not be joining Pacific Dawn in November. He will be taking out Pacific Jewel.

  • Julie

I am wondering if any one who has cruised on the PD has the receipe and amounts for the Dunes martini as I found it very nice on my last cruise.Or if anyone who is cruisng shortly could get the receipe for me.

  • Lin

    Hi Julie
I got a cocktail menu on the PD so I have the ingredients but not the quantities. Dunes was one of my favourites too!
    Coconut liqueur
    melon liqueur
    banana liqueur
    lemon and pineapple juice
    Happy cocktailing!

  • Janine

    Hi Kim,

Hope you had a fantastic cruise. Was wondering if you got a copy of the kids menu. I have a fussy eater and hoping there will be something he will eat on board. Otherwise, I guess he will starve. Lol

  • Janine

Booked for Pacific Dawn leaving Brisbane on 1st May 2010. I was wondering if the staff could email me a copy of the Kids menu as I have a particularly fussy eater. Would be a great help and definately would ease my mind.
    Thanks
    Janine

  • Tony Hall

    Hi Thomas,
My wife and I are travelling on Pacific Dawn out of Brisbane 1 April
we are travelling with our friends The prichards. It is their 25th wedding aniv on the 4th and our 25th on the 6th. would it be possible without the other three knowing to organise a special night as this for all of us is a momentous occation.
    Regards tony.

  • Patricia Berry

    Hi

It is my husband and I 50th Wedding Anniversary on the 20 May, 2011. We have booked for all our family to join us in the Pacific Dawn 14 May, 2011 for 7 days. There are 14 of us. My husband and myself and friends have been on PO cruises quite a few times, always having a marvelous trip. However, very concerned about the Freestyle dining. Friends have just returned on the Dawn from NZ and said it was really quite bad. Trouble booking an early table and being served very late in the evening. Of course being so many of us, it will be very difficult to book for so many, and we do want to have dinner each night with the family. Is there any chance that the set dining times will come back into being for our cruise next year or can you make a suggestion. I really want this cruise to be extra special as is it the first cruise for the rest of our family.

  • http://www.pocruises.com.au P&O Cruises

    Hi Patricia,

First of all, congratulations on your upcoming wedding anniversary – we’re thrilled you’re celebrating onboard the Pacific Dawn!

In terms of booking for a large group, we would recommend informing the Maitre D’ at the Palm Court dining room on deck 7 as soon as possible, once on board, advising of your requirements. Typically, even with set dining times, the maximum number of guests at a table is usually 10 however the ship staff can work with you to try and accommodate your family. Please keep in mind, a booking at the Salt Grill would require a single cruise card payment so this would need to be considered amongst your family members before dining.

    Thanks,
    P&O Cruises Australia
