Dicey Wooden Horse Racing

by P&O Cruises on August 25, 2010 · 4 comments

Dicey Wooden Horse racing is a thoroughbred Pacific Dawn classic. During the first sea day, 6 wooden horses are auctioned off to the highest bidders during the Owner’s Race. The final Owner’s Derby is hosted on the last sea day of the cruise and is extremely popular with everyone onboard.

The new horse owners and racing teams then have five days to launch a spectacular promotional campaign promoting their racing horse to fans bidding in the Owner’s Cup Derby on the last day of the cruise. This includes decorating and dressing their new thorough bred, overseeing supplementation for their  racing horses diet , training for the Owner’s Derby Cup , recreational needs off course,  and finding a suitable jockey!

You are welcome to bring bits and pieces of fabric (for a horse blanket or to dress the jockey), ribbon, beads, cord, feathers or small pieces of leather. On board you will have access to a multitude of decorations.

Before the Owner’s Cup Derby starts on the last day of the cruise, each of the six horse owners or the racing team will introduce their jockey on stage and present to the fans a brief presentation on their racing campaign during the cruise. PowerPoint slideshows are a great way of capturing all the excitement and showing other bidding fans exactly why they should bid on your horse!  All the money from the auction is presented to the owner or racing team of the winning horse.

Recently Pacific Dawn had the great privilege to have Australian champion jockey Larry Cassidy as a guest onboard. Larry presented the winning horse, ‘Big Boy’, jockey – Tracey Lee and the rest of the racing team with the takings from the Owner’s Cup Derby on the last day of the cruise. Larry’s daughter, Jade was a great favourite amongst the fans as she rode ‘Little Mermaid’ and won the ‘Disney Puddle Jump’ warm up race before the Owner’s Cup Derby.  Jade showed expert horsemanship and was approached by one of the six horse owners to jockey ‘Marian’s Million’ in the Owner’s Cup Derby!  Jade gave the winner ‘Big Boy’ a good run for his money.

Dicey wooden horse racing is a great activity for getting the creative juices flowing and having heaps of fun regardless if you are promoting your racing horse or taking part in the action on the day of the races. It is just $2 cash per bet, and gamblers must be 18 and over to bet.  If you have a hunch, bet a bunch!

Watch this space for our next blog on our Country & Western Theme Night.

Yeehaaa!

Getting to know me

by P&O Cruises on August 19, 2010 · 5 comments

Hello Everyone,

My name is Janita van Niekerk and my job on board the Pacific Dawn is Program Editor & now I’m happy to announce I’m the new Pacific Dawn Blogger.

So here is a little bit about me!

I enjoy working with people and creative 2 and 3 dimensional elements; like images, colour, texture, pattern, volume and space - hence I have a degree in Graphic Design & Photography.

I also have a passion for fitness and balanced nutrition and I am a qualified Pilates teacher.

The best advice I’ve ever received:

‘Carpe diem’ or translated ‘Seize the day’ from my Portuguese soul mate and mentor. The origin source for this Latin phrase is from the writer Horace (in Odes Book I) which translates as: “while we’re talking, envious time is fleeing: seize the day, put no trust in the future!” It simplifies life considerably!

Sea or Land?

My passion and curiosity for the wide expanse of salt water covering most of the earth’s surface started with this small girl exploring the beaches and rock pools around the Southern tip of Africa! Now I am grown up and exploring the beautiful blue aqua marine expanse on a superliner! I hail from a gene pool of Dutch and French seafarers that once sailed the Indian space trade route and decided to make wild and sunny Africa their home, grow vineyards and produce excellent wine!!

My place of residence when I am not on the High Seas?

Mother Africa! I am proudly South African and live in the beautiful & friendly Cape Town, the most southern city in Africa. My second home is Hermanus, a small rustic sea side village about a two hour, scenic coastal drive from Cape Town. I live 5 minutes away from the beach and the old harbour where the traditional whale crier blows his long kelp horn alerting everyone in town that there are whales in the bay. Hermanus hosts an annual Whale Festival to celebrate Southern Right Whales visiting the shallow and sheltered bays around Hermanus from June to November for mating, calving and nursing their young!

My favourite port/city?

Well I have been around the world and it’s a draw between St. Petersburg (Russia), Stockholm (Sweden), Reykjavik (Iceland), Mumbai (India) and Lisboa in Portugal! I am a very visual person (“colours, shapes and the quality of the light talks to me”) and these places were all a feast for the eyes! St. Petersburg is a city of great contrasts on all levels, Stockholm’s scenery, cultural and maritime heritage is awesome, Reykjavik with its surreal Icelandic landscapes, glaciers, Gulfoss waterfall and numerous geysers – any photographers dream, magical Mumbai in India for shopping and lunch at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel overlooking the Gateway of India. Lisboa with its Mediterranean cuisine and friendly people, is where I will be heading for my next holiday.

My favourite food/drink?

Fish, fish and more seafood. I am a bit of a health fanatic hence my love affair with Mediterranean food and fresh dishes like salads and tuna tartar (a signature dish from chef Luke Mangan and our own Salt Grill restaurant onboard). My favourite drink includes a variety of great red wines like Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz or Merlot or when my sweet tooth is calling ……a Dom Pedro with Kahlua & vanilla ice cream!

Dinner party guests I would invite if I could choose anyone?

I always wanted to be a time traveller and historian, so my dinner party guests will be variety of people from very different backgrounds and eras. A few names on the guest list will include famous seafarers and explorers like Thor Heyerdahl (the Kon-Tiki expedition), Ernest Shackleton, Frederick Cook, Roald Amudsen, Sir Francis Drake, Christopher Columbus, a few famous Vikings and off course our ship’s Captain, Captain David Box. For artistic inspiration I will invite Michael Angelo, Leonardo Da Vinci, Picasso, architect Antonio Gaudi, photographer Robert Capa and actor Hugh Jackman for very obvious reasons!

That’s it for me, please keep checking the blog for more hints and tips on cruising the Pacific with P&O, updates on our excellent entertainment, real stories of passengers and their time onboard Pacific Dawn, crew and officer’s bio’s, celebrity visits and heaps more!

Can’t wait to meet you on board.

Your friendly, helpful blogger
Janita

Guest Blog: Passenger Judy Oliver

by P&O Cruises on August 10, 2010 · 11 comments

Hi Dawn Bloggers,

It’s nice to change things up every now and again and we love to hear back from our passengers.

We are very proud to introduce to you, Judy Oliver, one of our regular contributors on Facebook, cruise enthusiast and recently back from a three day cruise onboard the Pacific Dawn to share her cruising experience with you all.

'Your holiday awaits out there'

'Your holiday awaits out there'

Tell us a little bit about yourself Judy, for those who don’t know you already…

I am 51 years old and have run my own swim school for 18 years now, remarried for 2 years to a wonderful man  (Darrell) who gives in to  my cruising addiction…lol. I have 3 children from my previous marriage and 4 step children, none of  whom live at home. I love cruising obviously, karaoke, gardening and doing up our home.

My first cruise was back in 1998 on the Fair Princess with my then hubby and 2 kids where we had an inside cabin for four. The cruise went to Noumea, Vila  and Mystery island, although we never made it to Mystery Island as the weather was too rough to tender.

I have always wanted to  cruise since my parents went on one when I was 16; I was so envious. I had been trying to win a cruise since I was old enough to enter,  but I was not lucky enough – so one day I just thought why not, lets do it! So we saved up enough to book a cruise. Well, I was hooked from the first day. Finally sailing on the ship of my dreams where I could leave the kids to look after themselves, and they made lots of friends onboard, we did we also. Ahhhhhhhhhhh I love the sea life.

I would have to say, beyond a doubt, that my Island Gems cruise on the 1st may 2010 was the highlight of my cruising history. We had 123 facebook friends to sail away with from our Facebook ‘roll call’ event, many of whom I had been chatting with online for nearly a year pre-cruise, so it felt like we had known each other for years already. I still keep in in contact with many of them and have even shared a holiday with one couple since. We booked a mini suite which was complete luxury, especialy having a balcony to sit out on in the mornings and watch the world go by with not a care in the world. The Islands – 6 ports in all, beautiful in their own special way. My first ever helicopter ride was in Vila. Wow. I now tell everyone to do this cruise – 11 days in Paradise, each day surpassing the last.

Next on my bucket list? Bora Bora. It’s truely my idea of paradise and I very much want to see it in my lifetime.

If I could give a first timer a tip, it would have to be – make sure you pack some sea sick tablets to be prepared in case they suffer from sea sickness. As I always say, if it is a bit rough, hang on and enjoy the ride! And of course, have fun.

The best part of cruising is the countdown. As the day gets closer, you run around getting all the last minute items, making sure you you’ve read the cruise book from back to front.

On the three day cruise  I recently had on the Pacific Dawn, I went with some friends – just to see the Dawn all done up. It has been so good watching Drydock scenes and being a part of the transformations. The Dawn is a beautiful ship to cruise on. I have sailed out on her two times now, and it excites me to hear the music pumping and people waving from the decks.

The first thing I do once onboard, is check out our cabin and then head on up to Lido deck to have a cocktail and start to mingle amongst other cruisers at the Sailaway party. This cruise just past, I met many of the staff – Paul (Cruise Director), Chris (Entertainer), Matt (DJ) and Jesbeth (Bartender) – all except Paul, who is new, remembered me from my last cruise in May.

Judy & Chris (Crew) on board 3 day cruise

This three day cruise went far too quickly as we had no ports to visits, but it is perfect for new cruises to try out cruise life, or of course for seasoned cruises to have a quick weekend away to recharge.

P&O have always made my cruises awesome, that’s why I prefer to go with them, as I like the fact that you are travelling with other Aussies – because we all know how to have a great time.

Signing off, Judy.

Thanks Judy for an excellent window into the cruise lifestyle, and of course for making our community so special. Your three day absence (whilst on board) was definitely noticed! You can check out more of Judy’s photos and of course chat with her about her cruise via Facebook , join the discussions or RSVP for your cruise ‘roll call’ event.

Hmmm.. chocolate!

by P&O Cruises on July 26, 2010 · 3 comments

As promised, we’re delivering on your onboard favourites this month and who can’t go past  a warm chocolate VOLCANO.

We warn you now, the recipe is for six people (or one, with a really big spoon!).

Enjoy…

Warm Chocolate Volcano

Warm Chocolate Volcano courtesy of Executive Chef Uwe Stiefel

You’ll need:

250 grams dark chocolate, chopped

100 grams unsalted butter, cubed

2 pieces eggs, at room temperature

2 pieces egg yolks, at room temperature

55 grams caster sugar

2 tablespoons all-purpose flour, sifted

Unsweetened chocolate powder, to dust

 Method:

1. Pre-heat the oven to 180 C. Brush 6 x 185 ml (6oz.) ramekins with melted butter. Place on a baking tray.

2. Combine 2/3 of the chocolate and butter in a small sauce pan over low heat. Stir frequently until the chocolate and butter have melted and the mixture is smooth, remove from heat.

3. Beat the whole eggs, egg yolks and sugar until thick and pale. Add the chocolate mixture and flour and use a large metal spoon or spatula to fold in until evenly combined.

4. Divide the mixture evenly amongst the ramekins. Stick a small quantity of chocolate into the center. Bake for 12 minutes until puddings have risen almost to the top of the ramekins. There are slightly underdone.

5. To serve, turn the puddings out onto serving plates. Dust with cocoa powder and serve with vanilla ice cream and dark chocolate sauce.

Delicious! Now that’s how to do a dessert.
